Linus Lohoff
Personal Background: Linus Lohoff was born in Germany in 1985, he only moved to Germany after spending the first six years of his life in Recife, Brazil. In 2006 Lohoff went to University of Applied Sciences in Duseldorf, Germany to study communication design. In 2010, he studied abroad in Barcelona, Spain at BAU - Escola Superior del Disseny. Lohoff fluently speaks German and English, although his first language is German. He is now an art director and photographer living in Barcelona.
Style: Linus' style is minimal and clean depending on the idea he is trying to create. Looking through his work, you can see that it is very simplistic, he tends to stick to two or three main colors. Another thing I found while looking through Lohoff's work is that he doesn't stick to one style of photography, like all of his work is minimalist and simple, but he has portraits, still-lives, and landscapes. He also has several portfolios of objects specifically positioned to make shadows. His photography uses the contrast of certain colors to bring out the object or objects he is photographing.
Philosophy: Lohoff doesn't consider himself a photographer, he believes he is an art director who likes to take pictures. It’s not about getting the perfect image or immediately being able to figure the image out, it's all about experimenting and exploring new aesthetics. Lohoff believes that in cutting out all the unnecessary things in a photograph, you really show the basis of the idea. A lot of the inspiration for Lohoff's work comes from his personal experiences.
Influences: I initially chose Linus Lohoff to do my final report on because his work really stood out, if was so different from anything I'd seen before. I think what really caught me has how he used such vibrant colors and contrasted them with other vibrant colors. I really liked how he uses the colors, not just as a background for the objects, but as an extra pop that makes the whole image stand out. Even though his work isn't really complicated, it's kind of beautiful in it's simplicity. I admire how Lohoff can say that he isn't a photographer but can still take such amazing and creative photos.

Compare and Contrast: For the first photo I used my old class schedule as the background because it was the closest color match. The color ended up being a lot lighter than I thought it would be, but it still matches better than anything else I had. The hand placement was pretty simple, it's just an okay symbol. I tried a lot of things to not have a shadow but I couldn't correct it with anything in my house. My photo turned out pretty similar to the one Linus Lohoff took. For the background in the second photo I found a book of construction paper. There was only one piece of yellow paper which was lucky. The color in this photo turned out really well considering I didn't have many choices. Since I didn't have my nails painted beforehand, I had to find pink nail polish to match the hand in the photo. I think that this photo most closely matches Lohoff's photos compared to the other ones I took. I used construction paper for the background in the last photo as well. The color turned out kind of bright which wasn't really the goal but there's nothing I could really do about it. I tried several times to get the last hand placement correct but it just didn't look right so I used my sisters hand instead and it came out better. Out of all three of my recreations, I think the last one has the least amount of shadow. The photo that I took was easy to recreate and I think it looks pretty similar.
Personal Artist Statement: My images tell a story of emotions. The first one is an okay sign, which as I understand it, means that I am okay. The second one means love in sign language, which is nice and peaceful. The third one is a fist, which I think is kind if aggressive. I had a lot of fun creating these images and making my sister help me, it was a really cool experience.
